A Mexican Senator demanded an answer from the federal government regarding the legalization of marijuana in three more U.S. states during the presidential elections.
Sen. Víctor Hermosillo, a Mexicali member of the National Action Party, made a request asking for actions from the federal government in response to the cannabis legalization in California, Massachusetts and Nevada.
The Mexican lawmaker expressed his concerns about the consequences in his country derived from the legalization, especially in the border region.
“It is a legal, social, economic and cultural paradox, especially in the border and for the country if we don’t do anything about it,” Sen. Hermosillo said. “We can protest to the Americans form involving us on the combat against drugs and now they will allow to smoke them. The United States just puts the consumers and we have the fatalities.”
Hermosillo said drug cartels will seek a new market in Mexico for all the marijuana that will stay now in the country due to the legalization, or would turn into other illegal activities.
The senator asked for nationwide hearings to reset the focus and policies related to attack production, distribution and consumption of marijuana in North America.
He went on to say that prohibition or legalization in either the United States or Mexico impacts both countries.
“We are obligated to adopt necessary measures to have the same criteria and laws in the North American region,” he said. “This is a grave issue that we must seriously address.”
