A state official said Tuesday the local government is seeking funds in order to pay interim teachers’ salaries owed for months which led a union local to suspend classes.
Secretary of Government Francisco Rueda said the state respects the National Education Workers Union Local 37 right to defend its rights.
He said the Mexican government has sent 1 billion pesos or $57.8 million during the year to cover those expenditures.
Rueda said the state will pay Friday 85 million pesos or $4.7 million in interim teachers owed since January and 25 million pesos or $1.3 million in Christmas bonuses owed to interim teachers.
Since Nov. 2013, the state has given retirement benefits to 1,136 teachers, the secretary said.
Rueda said state officials are seeking ways to solve the retirement issue according to the government’s financial situation.
The secretary asked the Local 37 secretary general María Luisa Gutiérrez to negotiate in order to find common grounds to solve the issue and asked teachers to get back to classrooms to avoid impacting students’ education.
