Teenage mom protection bill introduced
A state lawmaker introduced a bill that, if enacted, would mandate a shared responsibility in child support from parents of teenage noncustodial parents.
Assemblyman Sergio Tolento, a Mexicali member of the National Action Party, introduced a bill that would modify the state Civil Code that would force parents of teenage parents to pay child support if their their child misses payments.
The lawmaker said state law does not provide provisions in these cases.
“The bill seeks to provide protections for teenage parents and their children when family controversies arise in terms of child support and custody,” Tolento said. “Ascendants of a child support obligue would have a shared responsibility by setting with precision their co-responsibility in civil law.”
The bill also includes provisions that would change custodial priority from the actual preference given to paternal grandparents to the proposed maternal grandparents who regularly stay in charge of children.
Tolento said last year 29 percent of the over 51,000 births were from teenage moms.
The proposal would protect especially the teenage mothers and their families, who are regularly in fact the party in charge of the newborn.
