A state lawmaker introduced a resolution to request government officials, businessmen, non-profit organizations and health specialists to get involved in a special group to address environmental issues in Mexicali.
Assemblyman Víctor Morán, a member of the leftist National Regeneration Movement, said community members have many concerns regarding air and water quality issues related to the opening of new companies, as well as other businesses.
One of the projects underlined by the lawmaker is Viz Resource Management’s EcoZoneMx, located west of Mexicali and few miles from the United States border that has plans to manage 6 million tons of different types of waste that might impact the environment.
According to Morán developers have not taken into consideration impacts to the bighorn sheep and to other species in the region.
The lawmaker asked to include on the discussions Mexicali’s energy plants and beef processing plants, as well as the mining projects south of San Felipe.
The resolution was approved unanimously and co-authored by the other assemblymen.
