Staff from the state Secretary of Public Safety, or SSPE in Spanish, held a training class for business owners in order to prevent robberies.
SPPE’s Prevention Center Director Fernanda Rivera said the training course were provided during two weeks to about 300 business owners from Plaza La Cachanilla in downtown Mexicali.
Among to topics discussed she underlined basic measures for employee safety, what to do before, during and after a crime, as well as basic infrastructure in businesses to avoid becoming a target from criminals.
After the training, authorities held a fair for other business owners, visitors and customers.
Suspects caught after robbery
Four alleged members of a criminal band were apprehended Wednesday after a robbery, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.
Authorities said at 3:30 p.m. a robbery was reported by dispatchers in an Oxxo convenience store located at Fraccionamiento Parajes de Puebla in southeastern Mexicali.
After arrival, police officers were notified by store employees that four suspects arrived on scene with firearms to threaten her and rob money from the cash register and two packs of beer.
The suspects left scene on a black 4-door Honda Civic with no plates that was previously reported stolen.
Police officers found and stopped the vehicle to arrest Gerardo “Doe,” 20; Esven “Doe,” 18; José “Doe,” 26 and José “Doe,” 30.
The suspects were transported to the police headquarters for robbery and possession of a vehicle reported stolen, authorities said.
Street repaving announced
A state official said part of a highly used Mexicali street will get repaved.
Infrastructure and Urban Development Secretary Manuel Guevara said three quarters of a mile at Calzada Independencia Street will get its asphalt recycled between K Street and Benito Juárez Boulevard, where a authorities will use a special recycling machine.
The maintenance works will cost 1 million pesos or $55,555.
Guevara said the asphalt recycling is three times faster than traditional methods and the street can be used by drivers the same day.
The works will take a whole week, he said.
Hunting season begins
A state official said the hunting season here begins Friday and authorities have been getting prepared for the event.
Secretary of Tourism Delegate in Mexicali Eloy Moreno said the state has been coordinating its efforts along with the Secretary of Environmental Protection and the National Defense Secretary, as well as other public agencies and businesses to provide hunters order and security.
Hunting season ends Feb. 26 and the state expects to receive around 1,500 Mexican, American and Canadian hunters, who might spend $6 million.
The state has already 21 registered business that provide hunting services to tourists with 292 Sustainable Environmental Management Units, covering 2.4 million acres in Mexicali Valley and southern Ensenada
Last year, the state observed a 4.5 percent increase in the number of hunters and a 53.1 percent climb in Mexican hunters, he said.
A temporary office will open at Mexicali Downtown Port of Entry Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for arm inspection.
