A man who allegedly killed another male almost two years ago in a rural town was sentenced to 27.5 years in prison, said the Attorney General’s office.
Authorities said Javier Gabriel “Doe” was previously found guilty of the murder of Gustavo Ornelas Carpio.
The judge ordered the victim to pay $37,607 in Mexican currency for damage repair.
The victim was killed after the suspect shot him several times and causing the turnover of the vehicle in which the deceased man was a passenger.
Authorities said on October 18, 2014, the victim and a friend identified as Fernando arrived on a Chevrolet Suburban at a taco shop located at Ejido Alfredo V. Bonfil, southeast of Mexicali.
The victims arrived on scene, where the suspect and two other men were at, authorities said.
The suspect and the victim began an argument regarding a deuce.
One of the men who were with the suspect injured the deceased man’s companion and asked him to leave.
Ornelas Carpio attempted to flee on the vehicle and the suspect shot them several times.
One of the shots hit the victim’s head and caused the vehicle to overturn, authorities said.
Ornelas Carpio was transported to Mexicali’s General Hospital where he succumbed to injuries hours later.
Three arrested for robbery
Three individuals were arrested Wednesday evening after allegedly robbing a taxi driver with a firearm, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.
Authorities said at 9:30 p.m. a robbery was reported at Colonia Progreso in western Mexicali.

Before the robbery, the taxi driver observed the suspects leaving a white 2001 Honda Civic with California plates.
Both vehicles departed together, he said.
Police officers found Daniel “Doe,” 30 and José “Doe,” 26, at Federal Highway 2 at Ejido Hermosillo rural town and stopped the Honda.
The suspects attempted to flee but were eventually arrested.
Blocks away police agents found the taxi cab and arrested Verónica “Doe,” 34.

Unemployment goes down again
The unemployment rate in Baja California lowered again on June, from 2.48 percent in May to 2.42 percent last month, according to figures released by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography.
The agency also reported that unemployment rate for June 2015 was 4.71 percent in the state.
The rate is the lowest among northern Mexican border states and the fourth lowest nationwide.
Secretary of Economic Development Carlo Bonfante said this is the 23rd consecutive month of unemployment decrease and the lowest since February 2008. It is also the lowest for a month of June since the Great Recession began in 2007.
He said when Governor Francisco Vega took office the unemployment rate was 5.9 percent, the fourth largest in the country.
The secretary underlined the fact that 36,373 new jobs have been created in the first six months of the year. The figure translates into 8.3 percent of total jobs opened nationwide.
Manufacturing, Trade and Tourism have observed significant activity increase during the year, Bonfante said.
The secretary said authorities have kept a special effort to attract businesses in the aerospace and automobile sectors with the opening of training centers.
Soles are back
Soles de Mexicali basketball team will take part of the 2016-2017 season of Mexico’s National Professional Basketball League, or LNBP in Spanish, said the club and the league.
LNBP President Sergio Gane said on the league’s Facebook page that during a special meeting of team owners the stakeholders decided to include the Mexicali team in the season.
“I want to reiterate to all out fans that I have supported this decision made by league partners, prioritizing the consolidation of the league, especially in the athletic aspect,” Gane said. “I have reiterated that my working plan is based on equality, seriousness, certainty and compliance by all, and we are into a thorough transformation of our league.”
The LNBP president said the league will make public the schedule of games soon, as well as an update on all improvements in which the organization works on.
On a separate statement, the club said the decision was made during a meeting held in Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, by team presidents and LNBP board members.
Soles President Alan Dennis took part of the meeting, the club said.
The upcoming season might begin by mid-October.
Soles is the standing runner-up of the 2015-2016 season and has been champion twice.
“The work from board members and our office have not stopped,” said Soles General Manager Mario Flores. “We are still working to improve season after season, given Mexicali is a city that deserves good sports events.”
Soles were turned down from the league weeks ago after league officials announced the club was not included on the upcoming season.
