Beginning Monday, American visitors to the state will be able to report any emergency by dialing the same numbers they are used to in the United States.
Baja California Governor Francisco Vega launched the new emergency hotline 911, which substitutes the old 066 hotline.
In an event held at Tijuana’s emergency dispatching center, Gov. Vega made public the new hotline that will be shared by 15 other Mexican states in phase one.
Gov. Vega said the state leads the nation in anonymous emergency reporting, which in his mind means an increased trust residents have in their government.
He also said the Executive Office will introduce at the Assembly a bill to punish those who use the emergency hotline in an irresponsible way.
National Public Safety System Executive Secretary Ricardo Corral said the state has been underlined for good practices and has taken active part of the strategies set forth by the Mexican government.
