    Vehicle registration criticized by feds

A federal agency criticized a recently launched registration of illegal vehicles by the state of Baja California.

In a press release, Mexico’s Treasury Department, better known as Hacienda in Spanish, said the registration is not a path towards regularization as no special program is to open and no false expectations should be nurtured with the listing.

The agency said those in possession of American or Canadian vehicles imported illegally have the option to regularize them through a customs agent and paying taxes.

Vehicles made between 2007 an 2011 must pay fee of 1 percent of its cost and taxes.

“The Government of the Republic, under the strategy Together Against Illegality, in which business owners also take part, reiterates its commitment to combat conducts that impact strategic sectors and damage the national economy”, the agency said.

The Mexican Association of Automobile Distributors, or AMDA in Spanish, recently criticized the measure under the same argumentation expressed by the Mexican Treasury.

“We cannot allow the promotion of illegality by omitting the enforcement the state of Baja California is mandated to”, said the association in a press release.

The AMDA asked federal authorities to act against the vehicle registration and determine the appropriate discipline under the terms of thee agreements the Mexican government has with the state of Baja California.

According to the association, Baja California car dealers reported the highest increase of new vehicle sales during July with 56.3 percent and 3,827 units and also the largest climb during the year with 67.4 percent.
