    Complaints filed against teacher

Parents of a downtown public school have filed complaints against a sixth grade teacher under allegations of sexual abuse

Parents of a Mexicali public school filed several complaints against a teacher under allegations of sexual abuse of eight students.

Newspaper reports say the Leona Vicario Elementary School teacher has been accused before the Attorney General’s office.

The cases were first made public last week after parents denounced teacher Ricardo Roberto.

A parent identified as Ernesto told La Voz newspaper his daughter reportedly told him the minor saw the teacher allegedly touching another student inappropriately.

The incidents presumably repeated with other girls from grades third and sixth.

The teacher allegedly bought the impacted students candies and food.

Affected parents said the teacher has not been arrested while the principal failed to report the issue to the police.

The school’s principal said the teacher has been dismissed.

The state Attorney General’s office declined to comment in order to avoid affecting the investigation.

    DISMISSAL

Jazmin Legy, State Department of Education Delegate in Mexicali told the newspaper the teacher was dismissed immediately after the first complaint was filed.

The state official assured there is a zero tolerance policy on issues that put student integrity in jeopardy.

Legy said the interim teacher passed all tests and background checks before being hired.

The delegate said parents, teachers and students will be provided training and other services.

    MEETING WITH PARENTS

A state official visited Thursday the downtown Mexicali school where several parents filed complaints before the state Attorney General’s office for alleged sexual abuse cases of students.

Sec. Gerardo Solís met with parents of the Leona Vicario Primary School.

The state official said in a prepared statement the authorities have committed to protect students, teachers and staff at schools.

According to Solís, the administration protects children and teenagers in order to provide education services and avoid violent acts against students.

Media outlets have reported the school principal failed to call the police after receiving the first complaints. Instead, the principal called the area’s director.

The teacher has already been removed from the classroom.

Parents have told media outlets the principal has denied meeting with complainants.

It is unclear if the teacher has been arrested.

Sec. Solís said the agency has a zero-tolerance policy against cases of sexual abuse from teachers.

The state official assured the agency has collaborated with law enforcement and prosecutorial authorities in the cases.

The state Attorney General’s office has also moved forward with at least two complaints while the rest is under investigation.

Parents and students will be provided counseling while preventative measures are taken at the school, the secretary said in the statement.

Sec. Solís said staff activities in reaction to the complaints will also be under investigation.
