Mexican lawmakers approved a bill make private parking lot owners purchase insurance and reduce fees
Mexico City. Mexican lawmakers recently approved a bill that mandates states to enact private parking lot laws.
The bill says states must adapt local laws to set fees charged by parking lot owners depending on the time a spot is used.
According to the proposal, cities must adopt related ordinances.
The bill was turned to the Mexican Senate for approval.
According to the bill’s text, private parking lots were opened to allow drivers to leave their vehicles under the care of private parties.
The bill seeks to make parking lot owners comply with certain regulations.
Congressman Rodrigo Sánchez, of the National Action Party, said some parking lots report significant revenue without any responsibility with customers.
The lawnmower considered that many private parking lots notify customers that management is not responsible for vehicle loss, damage or theft.
Most of these parking lot companies do not offer insurance and have no permits to operate.
Congressman Mario Xavier Pedraza, of the Green Party, said families purchase vehicles for necessity and not for luxury.
The Mexican lawmaker said parking lots need regulations in regards to fees charged to customers and security.
«Little has been done to stop abuse,» Pedraza said.
