A gay couple was the first ever to
marry during a city massive wedding held in Mexicali Fair.
Joel and Everardo were married
Tuesday evening along with 118 other couples after the state Assembly approved
a bill to allow same-sex marriage.
The wedding was considered a
significant accomplishment for the LGBTQ community.
“We are excited and happy for this
great day,” the couple said. “We have the same rights. We must be treated
equally.”
The couple said they had plans to hold
a wedding party.
Mexicali Mayor Guadalupe Mora
shared in social media a picture along with Joel and Everardo and other city
officials.
“This is an accomplishment for
human rights,” Attorney Jose Luis Marquez said. “We are now seeing a more
mature couple.”
Marquez was able years ago to
legally force the city to marry Fernando Urias and Victor Aguirre after a
years-long fight. They became the first gay couple to ever get a marriage
license here.
“We
are very happy,” Urias said regarding Tuesday’s wedding.
