Pro Life groups demand meeting with Governor elect

Self-proclaimed Pro Life groups demanded a meeting with Baja California governor-elect Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, in order to discuss the potential withdraw  of a bill that, if enacted, would decriminalize abortion.

According to group representatives, said request was scheduled for this past Saturday. However, the former mayor of Mexicali did not answer said request.

The group pointed out that Ávila Olmeda promised during her campaign to support different religious leaders who stand in favor of life, for which they demanded that she keeps her word and commitments.

Group’s spokeswoman Claudia Herrera commented that they do not trust the Assembly or its speaker, Juan Manuel Molina, due to a history of alleged due process violations, so the group requested the intervention of the elected governor so that the bill is withdrawn.

Last week, group members demanded entry to the Legislative building after rumors indicated that lawmakers were about to approve the bill. Speaker Molina denied the measure was included in the agenda.

The group appealed to the governor-elect’s position as a woman and as a representative of Baja Californians to rule in favor of their request.

The announcement was made at the State Center for the Arts in Mexicali, where on Halloween the incoming governor plans to take the oath of office.

Likewise, the group indicated that this was a message for the governor-elect, however, they mentioned that they will wait for her response to determine whether or not they will attend the event.
