    Job crusade launched

    Baja California Governor Francisco Vega launched Tuesday the Economic Growth Crusade that seeks to open 50,000 new jobs and private company investments of $2.6 billion during the year.

    Along with businessmen and state and municipal officials Gov. Vega said the project looks to keep the state as a leader in growth, entrepreneurship and innovation.

    The crusade also includes a series of measures to provide support and economic stimuli for up to 1,059 million pesos or $52.95 million.

    Gov. Vega asked to keep away personal interests and work towards concrete programs to promote employment and business opportunities statewide to strengthen families’ economy and work together to create conditions the state requires and residents demand.

    The Department of Economic Development has 695 million pesos or close to $35 million in federal and state funds for economic development projects for small and medium-sized businesses.

    The crusade also includes agricultural, touristic, labor, fishing and property ownership projects.

    Man sentenced to 8 years in prison

    A man who was found guilty for comparable rape was sentenced to eight years in prison, said the Attorney General’s office.

    Assistant Attorney in Mexicali Fernando Ramírez said a state judge condemned Ray Oswaldo “Doe” after being found almost two years ago inside a hotel room with a 12-year-old girl while having sex.

    The incident was reported early on June 25, 2015, when the minor’s parents reported the girl was missing from their Colonia Carranza residence.

    The girl allegedly left her home hours before the report, authorities said.

    A family neighbor told the girl’s parents that the child left on a white Ford Explorer.

    Ministerial police officers found the suspect vehicle in a motel located in eastern Mexicali.

    Man caught with firearm

    A man who was allegedly arrested Tuesday with a firearm was accused by a woman for keeping her captive against her will, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.

    Authorities said at 5:40 p.m. a woman approached police officers at Colonia Progreso neighborhood in western Mexicali to report a man presumably imprisoned her falsely.

    The suspect is boyfriend to the victim’s sister, the police said.

    Police agents arrived at 314 Zacatecas Street where they observed the suspect while running away.

    The man was in possession of a .32-caliber firearm loaded with two cartridges.

    The suspect was taken in custody and transported to the police headquarters.

    Men arrested with shotgun

    Two men were arrested early Wednesday on a taxi cab in which police officers found a shotgun, said the municipal Public Safety Department.

    Authorities said at 3 a.m. police agents observed the driver of a white 2014 Nissan Tsuru by Justo Sierra Boulevard at Colonia Cuauhtémoc neighborhood on excess of speed.

    Police officers stopped the driver.

    While inspecting the vehicle police agents found a .223-caliber Magpul shotgun loaded with 29 cartridges.

    Police agents arrested driver Francisco “Doe,” 39 and passenger Heriberto “Doe,” 41.

    Native historian to be recognized

    The City of Mexicali announced a special event for today in which Cucapá historian Inocencia González Sáinz will be recognized.

    In a press release authorities said the event is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Casa de la Cultura in Mexicali’s Downtown.

    González Sáinz is the only Mexicali native that creates indigenous capes that used to cover locals women’s breasts.

    She has taken part in nation expositions and contests in which she has obtained prizes.

    The Cucapá community of Mexicali –a tribe that has been living in the area for centuries- has only few hundred of members that live all over the municipality of Mexicali, with the largest community located at El Mayor town by kilometer 57 mark of the San Felipe Highway.
