Three men were arrested Tuesday morning after allegedly committing a robbery in eastern Mexicali, said the Municipal Department of Public Safety.
Authorities said at 11:09 a.m. police officers arrested Gerardo “Doe,” 37, Pedro “Doe,” 40 and Víctor “Doe,” 29.
According to a 56-year-old man,
The suspects allegedly shot a 56-year-old man who was driving a black 2007 Toyota Corolla with California registration.
Two of the suspects allegedly shot the victim with a .380-caliber Colt revolver and caused injuries on the driver’s left arm.
The suspects then took the driver’s vehicles and fled from scene.
Moments later, a 51-year-old woman reported the carjacking of her red 2010 Toyota Corolla with plates from the State of Sonora.
The victim was threatened with a firearm to steal her vehicle.
The suspects were found by police officers, who attempted to stop the drivers.
Police agents chased the suspects through several blocks, until the suspects stopped at Gómez Morín Boulevard and Ayuntamiento Street at Colonia Lázaro Cárdenas neighborhood, but still attempted to flee on foot.
The suspects were arrested and transported to a prosecutorial agency under charges of carjacking.
Water rate increase of 36 percent proposed
A state official introduced at the Assembly a budget proposal for next year that includes a 36 percent increase of Mexicali’s water rates.
State Public Utilities Commission director Francisco Paredes presented the agency’s budget proposal for 2017, which sets expenditures of $56.7 million.
The official said the augmentation proposed is based on the National Water Commission’s reduction of funds to states.
However, senior citizens, non-profit organizations and retired residents will still be able to take advantage of special rate discounts, and the agency will keep its annual one-time payment with discounts.
Paredes said the agency has plans to make multi-million repairs in its water and wastewater plants, as well as to introduce new water meters, rehabilitate water lines and introduce water service to urban and rural areas that as of today have no service.
The expenditures also include vehicle, machinery and equipment replacement, as well as new offices and facilities, he said.
District 6 Assemblyman Sergio Tolento, a Mexicali member of the governing National Action Party, criticized the fact that the increase represents punishment to customers who keep their accounts in good standing.
