Landowners block beer plant
A group of Mexicali Valley landowners began Sunday a blockade at the site where Constellation Brands plans to install a beer plant in southern Mexicali.
The protestors led by Mexicali’s leader of the National Farmworker Confederation Rigoberto Campos blocked the four entrances to the lot located by the San Felipe Highway.
The farmers said the project will impact their future given the large amount of water the plant will need during its operations.
Campos showed documents that certify the Baja California state government donated the lots where the plant will be installed.
Congresswoman Nancy Sánchez, a Mexicali member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, send a letter to her party’s congressional leader requesting federal agencies to address the issue in public and say if the project has the proper permits and licenses to operate.
“A company wouldn’t do such an investment if it does not have proper documents for sure,” she said.
Sánchez said she is openly against the beer plant.
The Mexican lawmaker said that after a meeting with Mexican officials she was notified the company has not submitted applications to extract underground water.
However, the company has requested permits for wastewater discharge.
The congresswoman explained the permits can only come from the state through a reservoir handled by the State Water Commission and municipal agencies like Mexicali’s Public Utilities Commission with keeps the National Water Commission out of the project.
