A state lawmaker introduced a resolution that seeks to ask the Mexican government a reduction of the sales tax rate.
Assemblywoman Rocío López, a member of the leftist Democratic Revolutionary Party, made the proposal that was voted unanimously to request Mexico’s Secretary of the Treasury José Meade and Speaker of the House Javier Bolaños to decrease the sales tax rate in border areas from 16 to 11 percent.
According to the lawmaker the reduction request looks to promote economic development and family well-being of Baja California families.
The resolution was co-authored by assemblymen Andrés De La Rosa with the National Action Party, Institutional Revolutionary Party’s Bernardo Padilla and Baja California Party’s Jorge Núñez.
Three years ago, members of the Mexican Congress approved an increase in the sales tax rate from 11 to 16 percent, which according to local officials has caused an impact in trade.
Mexico’s congressmen must approve the federal budget in the next weeks, and it includes the sales tax rates.
