    Three cases of leprosy detected

A state official said three cases of lepers have been confirmed in the last three years.

Secretary of Public Health Guillermo Trejo said the agency provides treatment to those who have been detected with the illness.

He added the cases might have been from out of the state as Baja California receives immigrants from other parts of the country.

Trejo said the agency has professionals and appropriate treatment to help those who suffer from leprosy.

Lepers are caused by Mycobacterium leprae that is contagious through prolongued exposition with a sick individual.

The secretary said the agency has ongoing preventative measures like educational events and the delivery of flyers to avoid residents from getting sick.

    Rickettsia death toll report released

A state official said Tuesday last year a total of 23 people died due to Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

State Chief Epidemiologist Néstor Hernández said so far this year another fatality was reported due to the same illness.

The victim was a Mexicali man, he said.

The official said ticks hide during winter in warm areas to avoid cold.

The illness is caused by sick tick bites.

Hernández asked residents to fumigate their homes, avoid having unused sofas and mattresses and keep pets clean.
