The Mexican government decided to delay the deadline for vehicle importation beyond President Enrique Peña Nieto’s term, a federal lawmaker said.
Congresswoman Gina Cruz, a Mexicali member of the National Action Party, said the deadline was moved until Dec. 31, 2019.
Cruz, who chairs the Revenue and Public Credit Commission, said the announcement was published in Mexico’s Official Federation’s Daily, the equivalent to the U.S. Federal Register.
The measure sets importation taxes to vehicles in the Mexican northern border communities, she said.
“Having a vehicle is not a luxury, but a necessity,” Cruz said. “Every day thousands of people must transport themselves to school, work or to have recreational or family activities that also generate economic opportunities in our region.”
Cruz, a former Mexican Consul in Calexico, said the measure was negotiated by lawmakers from her party.
