A state agency and the Autonomous University of Baja California, or UABC in Spanish, will hold the Asphalt Week event from 6-9 Sept. at the college’s central campus.
State Secretary of Infrastructure and Urban Development Manuel Guevara said Association of Civil Engineers of Mexicali and the local chapter of the Construction Industry Chamber will also take part of the event.
UABC’s School of Engineering Civil Engineer Program Coordinator Alejandro Mungaray-Moctezuma said the event includes an exposition of flexible pavements as well as a showdown of products and services, seminars and other educational activities.
Mexicali’s Construction Industry Chamber Chairman Alfredo Gómez said pavement in cities like Mexicali are a great challenge due to its weather and added materials used for pavement must have good quality even though the higher price.
Civil Engineer Association Chairman José Inzunza said authorities and companies must also consider introduction of water and storm-water lines when building or paving a street.
Suspects caught in downtown
Two men were arrested Tuesday night in Downtown Mexicali after allegedly robbing and punching a man, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.
Authorities said at 9 p.m. police officers arrested Efraín “Doe,” 25 and Antonio “Doe,” 26, at Altamirano Street and Morelos Street.
The suspects allegedly punched a 29-year-old man to rob him a cell phone and 470 pesos.
The suspects were found, arrested and transported to the police headquarters.
Men arrested for robbery
Four men were arrested Tuesday morning after allegedly committing a robbery at Ejido Puebla rural town in southeastern Mexicali, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.
Authorities said at 7 a.m. the robbery was reported at Fifth Street and Paulino Martínez Street.
After arrival, police officers interviewed a 15-year-old male student who told agents the suspects brandished a knife to rob him 50 pesos in coins.
Police agents searched the area and found the suspects, who were identified as Julio “Doe,” 38; Aldo “Doe,” 19; Gerardo “Doe,” 21 and Alexis “Doe,” 18.
The suspects were transported to the police headquarters.
Over 250 transit drivers fined
Mexicali’s Municipal Transit System, or Simutra in Spanish, director said 259 fines have been given to drivers of transit buses for riding with the air conditioning units off.
Simutra’s Director Alfredo Arenas said his staff has continuously making inspections on transit buses to grant users a quality service.
The fines cost drivers and companies around $58.33, he said.
Users have filed complaints before Simutra through the 072 hotline and even on social media, Arenas said.
Simutra’s staff also inspects bus cleanness and driver service, he said.
