Inflation rate declined in the first half of February, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography said
The city of Mexicali recorded during the first half of February a lower inflation rate compared to past months.
The National Institute of Statistics and Geography said in the first two weeks of February inflation was 8.5 percent — the lowest in the last two months.
However, Baja California Center of Economic Studies President Roberto Valero told La Crónica newspaper said some food items have started to see a price decrease, but the decline is not generalized.
Eggs and corn tortillas still see high prices due to the bird flu and the cost of grains.
Valero told the newspaper some public services like electricity, birth certificates, and water have seen an increase that has an effect on inflation.
Lawmaker introduces DUI bill
A state lawmaker recently introduced a bill that, if enacted, would provide law enforcement and judges new authority to suspend or cancel driver licenses to drivers who are caught under the influence.
The proposal to reform the Law of Vehicle Control Services focuses on drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Assemblymember Diego Echevarría, of the conservative National Action Party, introduced the bill.
According to the lawmaker, Baja California suffers a severe issue related to traffic accidents caused by drivers under the influence.
Municipal ordinances prohibit drivers from combining the wheel and alcohol or other substances. In the first case, drivers are not allowed to drive with a blood alcohol level of 0.8 grams per liter of blood.
Mexican Department of Health sets such levels of two beers for a 70-kilogram or 154.3-pound woman.
Echevarría proposes the suspension of driver’s licenses for up to a year for those caught DUI.
Also, the proposal includes provisions to suspend driver’s licenses in case of non-renewal for over four years or the accumulation of at least three tickets for major violations.
The measure was turned to a commission for its discussion.
