Mexico increases highway tolls 7.82 percent

The Mexican Department of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation announced the increase of highway tolls 7.82 percent

Mexico’s Department of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation said Tuesday federal highway tolls increased 7.82 percent.

The toll price came into effect Tuesday.

According to the agency, the toll increase is based in last year’s inflation rates.

Also, the Department said last year tolls remained the same compared to 2021.

Private operators contracted to build and maintain highways adjust tolls during the first months of each year based in signed contracts with the Mexican government.

Other privately managed highways will see tolls increased next month.

The new price tag makes it more expensive to travel to coastal cities like Tijuana and Ensenada.

According to the Department tolls increase seeks to keep the highway network financially stable.

The agency said Mexico will make sure highway operators improve safety and services along the network.

    Record remittances reported

Last year, the state of Baja California recorded the largest amount of remittances in history.

La Crónica newspaper reported that the state received $1.4 billion USD in 2022 — above all foreign investment recorded last year.

Also, the remittances were about two-fifths of the state of Baja California’s expenditures last year.

Baja California Center of Economic Studies President Roberto Valero told the newspaper the record remittances show a lack of job opportunities in the state, which has forced many employees to seek a better future in other countries.

The majority of those remittances came from Baja Californians working as legal permanent residents in the US.

Tijuana leads with about half of those remittances.

Mexicali reported $294 million USD in remittances — well above the city’s $240 million USD last year’s budget.
