Mexicali Assemblywoman Mónica Bedoya was elected Tuesday night as the new and last Assembly Speaker of the XXI Legislature.
Bedoya, a Mexicali member of the National Action Party, or PAN in Spanish, was elected with 21 votes in favor, one against and one abstention.
Assembly members also elected Armando Espinoza as Vicepresident, Rosa Peralta as Secretary, Margarita Corro as Secretary Pro-Tempore and Julio Vázquez as Voting Secretary.
The new board members took the oath early Wednesday and their period runs from June 1 until September 30, the Legislature’s last day.
Assemblyman Roberto Dávalos, a Tijuana member of the Democratic Revolution Party, said the legislative members of PAN stole him the presidency.
Originally, an agreement was made three years ago to let one member of the ruling political alliance to lead the Assembly.
This time it was for the PRD to occupy the rotational position.
Dávalos said he does not have a personal issue with Bedoya, but added her election tarnished a presidency that might have been elected democratically.
