A Mexicali City council member is under investigation for allegedly providing safety net benefits to family and staff members
A member of the Mexicali City Council and four people are under investigation by the Comptroller’s office.
Back in June the Institutional Revolutionary Party filed a complaint against National Regeneration Movement Party Council member Jose Ramon Lopez Hernandez for giving out city safety net benefits to family and staff members.
Comptroller Hector Ceseña said the investigation is ongoing.
So far the city Treasurer’s Office has already turned all related evidence and those under investigation have been questioned.
The Comptroller’s office is analysing evidence, Ceseña said.
However, the comptroller explained the agency is deciding whether the issue is an administrative or a criminal case.
If found responsible, those involved could be suspended at least from office for a year.
Discount offered in driver licenses, vehicle registration
Mexicali residents will be given a 100 percent discount in fines and other services like vehicle plates, registration and driver licenses.
Baja California State Tax Service Director Gustavo Santos said the benefit began Tuesday and is expected to expire by mid-December.
The break is based on a gubernatorial decree that seeks to provide residents some help.
The decree also includes a discount of 100 percent in fines in taxes if paid in a single payment.
If made in six payments, the discount goes down to 50 percent.
Same discounts apply to other tax debts, Santos said.
According to the manager, the state has recorded a significant number of residents who owe plates, stickers, vehicle registration and driver license fees in Baja California.
