An Assembly member introduced a bill that, if enacted, would repeal a legal protection shield that protects lawmakers from being arrested or detained.
Assemblyman Jorge Núñez, a Mexicali member of the Baja California State Party, or PBC in Spanish acronym, introduced the proposal to eliminate the shield known in Spanish as “fuero.”
Originally, the protection prohibited Mexican authorities from arresting legislative members for making harsh remarks against the government.
Núñez said the measure would still provide parliamentary immunity while contributing to consolidate the state’s democracy by establishing solid basement for equality.
He said lawmakers should not have a preferred treatment from judiciary authorities, meaning no difference between elected officials and constituents must exist.
This legal protection, he added, “has become a privilege that causes corruption practices.”
Núñez said the proposal was introduced as a reflection of voter desire and is part of a series of prioritized bills that have to be addressed by the Legislature to modify crucial issues for the state’s public life.
