    Lawsuit filed against city officials

MEXICALI.- A business group leader filed a lawsuit against city officials to demand an investigation for the alleged illegal hiring of employees.

The lawsuit was filed at the City’s Controller Office by Mexicali’s Entrepreneurial Center (or Coparmex in Spanish) President Francisco Fiorentini, Secretary José Manuel Salcedo Sañudo and the center’s board member and former Chair Ignacio Avilés.

The lawsuit filing was approved by Coparmex board members Oct. 10 and based on articles from Mexico’s and state constitutions, as well as the state Budget and Civil Service laws.

Fiorentini said Coparmex has stood in favor of improving the city’s finances given it appropriates more funds for payroll instead of infrastructure.

The hiring of staff might lead to an additional 250 million pesos or $13.8 million in expenses that were not budgeted for this year.

The Coparmex leader criticized past administrations for conceding privileges and giving up to political pressure that impacts the city instead of increasing the local government’s efficiency.

“We ask residents to act and get involved in the decisions that impact us as city,” he said. “We must demand from our representatives to comply with the tasks they were assigned for.”

Fiorentini said the state’s Civil Service Law was modified recently and now mandates all new jobs must go through a contesting process in which any individual can apply for.
